But what about the western convert to Islam, who is far removed from the cultures, traditions and languages that this scripture helped to shape and preserve? What does he or she find compelling about Qur’an? This is not an obvious or necessary question, for not every religion’s converts are familiar with its scripture or scriptures. It probably would not be asked so readily of converts to Buddhism or Hinduism or Christianity, for example. Yet practically every western convert to Islam speaks of the primacy of Qur’an in his or her life.
